How to File a Roof Insurance Claim in Illinois After a Storm

Hail or wind damage? Here's exactly how the claim process works — and how to avoid the mistakes that get claims denied.

1. Don't wait — Illinois claims have a deadline

Most Illinois homeowner's policies require you to file a storm claim within a limited window (often one year, sometimes less) from the date of the storm. The longer you wait, the harder it is to prove the damage came from a specific event. If a major storm hit your area, get an inspection soon — even if the roof looks fine from the ground.

2. Get a professional inspection first

Before you call your insurer, have a licensed roofer inspect and document the damage with dated photos. This does two things: it tells you whether you even have a legitimate claim (so you don't file a claim that gets denied and counts against you), and it gives you documentation the adjuster can't easily dismiss.

3. File the claim

Call your insurance company or file online. You'll get a claim number and an adjuster will be assigned. Be factual: give the storm date and describe the damage. Don't guess at dollar amounts.

4. Meet the adjuster — with your roofer there

This is the step that makes or breaks a claim. Adjusters are thorough but they can miss damage, and their estimate drives your payout. Have your roofer on-site during the inspection to point out every bit of hail bruising, wind lift, and flashing damage so nothing gets left off.

5. Review the approval and get to work

If approved, your insurer pays the cost to repair or replace minus your deductible. You typically get an initial check, then a second (recoverable depreciation) once the work is done. Your roofer handles the install; you pay only your deductible.

Watch out for storm chasers. After big storms, out-of-town crews flood the area promising "free roofs." A reputable local roofer will give you an honest inspection — even if the answer is that you don't have a claim.
